Alzheimer's Project

Alzheimer's Project is located at 301 East Tharpe St, Tallahassee just west of St. Paul's UMC. Alzheimer's Project provides for services to families whose members wander due to suffering from dementia disorders, Down's Syndrome and Autism. Training for persons who relieve caretakers of people wih Alzheimer's Disease is provided.

CENTENARY CAMP

Centenary Camp is a ministry of Northwest District located between Quincy and Gretna. It provides a facility for conferences, workshops and retreats for churches and groups. Currently undergoing renovation, the camp now has a resident director. Possibilities for participation include building residential and recreational facitlities, and helping with various maintenance projects.

CROP WALK

Historically, St. Paul's UMC Mission Team has supported CROP WALK through both contributions and by participating in the Walk. However, recently due to conflicting dates and too many same type walks in the community, we have not had any active walkers.

Disaster Response Team

Whenever and wherever a disaster occurs, a St. Paul's team of volunteers is needed. It may be a response to fill flood buckets, provide food or drinkable water, or to give information.

The St Paul's Mission Team plans to have a Katrina team project either to Louisiana or Mississippi in 2008.

ECHO

ECHO has been serving Leon County for more than 25 years. ECHO provides emergency care, homeless family services and employment services. Aproximately 19,000 people are served each year.

St. Paul's provides a banquet once per year in the Fall for Jubliee Job-Link clients with volunteers serving, decorating, and planning the banquet held in St Paul's Sanders Hall. Volunteers are welcome to serve.

St. Paul's provides food donations by filling grocery bags (134 in Sept) with goods several times per year for homeless families at ECHO.

St. Paul's also donates good condition furniture and household supplies for families in housing crisis.

Florida Impact

Since 1979 Florida Impact has been dedicated to working for social justice issues in Florida. The mission is to advocate for children and youth, human rights and for the relief of hunger and poverty. Impact is located at 1331 E. Lafayette St., Suite A, Tallahassee

Florida United Methodist Children's Home

The Florida United Methodist Children's Home is an agency of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. The Children's Home cares for school-aged children and youth, ranging in age from 5-18. The Children's Home is located in Enterprise, Florida.

St Paul's supports the FUMChildren's Home with its fifth Sunday offerings at all worship services. Visits can be made to the Children's Home when there is Visitation Day for the NW District Area. Individuals or groups may make a visit by calling the number listed below. Christmas and Beginning of School Gifts are encouraged but need to be coordinated through the Children's Home with the phone number below.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization building simple, decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need. St. Paul's has provided workers (volunteers) who help build the home over a period of approximately 6-8 weeks. As a convenant sponsor, we also provide cash if we undertake the project on our own. Habitat has built 100+ houses in the Tallahassee area. St. Paul's has worked on over 10+ houses.

HEIFER PROJECT

The Heifer Project is an international program that provides livestock to needy families throughout the world (including the United States) helping them to become self-sufficient. St. Paul's supports this organization by purchasing animals that help people in many countries.

St. Paul's Heifer "animal sale" is scheduled in early December for families or individuals who wish to purchase a Christmas Gift "animal" in honor or in memory of a person. St. Paul's Sanders Hall is the site for these purchases.

HISPANIC MINISTRY

Through the Florida-Cuba Covenant St. Paul's participates in a shared ministry with our "sister"Methodist Church in Yaguaramas, Cuba, where the Rev. Lester Fernandez is pastor. Communications, devotional materials, supplies and prayers are mutually exchanged.

Within the NW District St. Paul's helps support two Spanish language congregations, both served by the Rev. Daniel Vizcaino. Included in the support are scholarships, parsonage expenses and salary assistance.

St. Paul's has sponsored adult and youth mission trips to other countries with plans for 2008 Mission Trips to Nicaragua and Cuba.

St. Paul's observes Hispanic Heritage Week with a special worship service in September.

Homeless Christmas Pies

St. Paul's UMC joins several churches in the Tallahassee community to provide a Christmas Meal (50-60 pies for SPUMC) served at the Trinity United Methodist Church for the homeless population. Volunters, bake a few extra pies and bring them to St. Paul's UMC Sanders Hall on December 24 by 3 PM.

HOPE COMMUNITY

Housing Opportunities and Personal Empowerment Community is a program of the Big Bend Homeless Coalition. St. Paul's has been preparing and serving dinner for the residents on the second Monday of each month since June, 2006. Different groups take turns each month by preparing food at home or in the Hope kitchen, or partly at home and partly at Hope. Cost of the meal averaged around $150 for approximately 80 persons.

Operation Christmas Child

This is a Samaritan's Purse project. St. Paul's UMC supports the project by filling approximately 200 boxes during the month of October and the first two weeks of November. These decorated boxes are distributed to children worldwide for Christmas. Pamphlets are available listing the contents for the boxes in Sanders Hall.

PAEC Migrant Education Program

The Panhandle Area Educational Consortium migrant program provides funds to assist migrant children and their families. The funds are used for advocacy, support of schools with migrant children, literacy programs, and the transition of secondary school students to post secondary education and employment. Some 23 services are provided. St. Paul's has a "Bring a Shirt (longsleeved) and/or Hat Week" for migrants who work under unhealthy conditions such as sprays being used in the fields where vegetables are grown.

Pine Straw Sale

This is the big fund maker for the Mission Team held in April. Pine straw orders are taken in advance and a person can pick up the order or have it delivered by marking your choice on the order form. Volunteers are needed for unloading bales of straw, delivering and taking orders and providing trucks.

Red Bird Mission

Red Bird Mission is an institution of the Red Bird Missionary Conference related to the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. The Mission is located in Beverly, Kentucky. Red Bird Mission and Clinic have been providing ministries in the region of the Appalachian Mountains since 1921. The need remains critical in this isolated, rural distressed area. St. Paul's supports Red Bird Mission through Youth Mission Trips, and buying and selling Red Bird handmade crafts at St. Paul's Craft Fair in October. St. Paul's also contributes to the support of Red Bird Missionaries, Fred and Pat Haggard.

SE COMMUNITY BLOOD CENTER DRIVE

The Blood Mobile comes to St. Paul's UMC every other month and will continue to do so providing enough volunteer donors sign up to give blood. The bus arrives at the church at 8:15 AM and remains until 12 noon. Volunteers are needed and sign up is recommended.

TEAM

The mission of the Tallahassee Equality Action Ministry is to enable people of diverse faiths to work powerfully and effectively together to redress injustices in our community. Currently, TEAM has 20 member congregations representing over 13,000 people in Leon County. TEAM have taken successful action on several community issues such as Health Care, Transportation Campaign where Star Bus routes have been prioritized, Homelessness: Change for Change Programs, and leadership development. Rally and organizational meetings are held in one of the twenty churches.

UMCOR

The United Methodist Committee On Relief is the United Methodist Church's first responder to national and international emergency needs caused by hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and other disasters. It provides emergency relief, supplies, clothing, shelter and water within 24 hours of the disaster. Every dime you give goes to the need; nothing is taken out for overhead. Contributions may be given through the local United Methodist Church.

The United Methodist Volunteers In Mission provides and promotes short-term mission opportunities for disaster responses, adult and youth mission trips, indivitual mission trips, internships, and medical teams, both international and in-your-backyard missions. St. Paul's supports UMVIM on the Southeastern Jurisdiction level with contributions for leadership training and placement of teams.

Vashti Center

Vashti Center (in Thomasville, GA) is a ministry of the United Methodist Church and a mission of the United Methodist Women. It is a non-profit organization offering a continuum of care for children and families in need. Vashti provides an Intermediate Residential Program for boys and girls ages 6-17, a Second Chance Program for teen mothers ages 13-17 with their infant and toddler children, and Wraparound Services for severely emotionally disturbed youth ages 5-17 years. Vashti is an authorized First Placement/Best Placement Provider. St. Paul's supports Vashti through monetary contributions, visits and tours, and opportunities for service project participation.

Wesley Foundation at FAMU

The Pastor of the Wesley Foundation is the Rev.Lawrence Barriner, a member of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. More information will follow for the Foundation is planning a student mission trip to Haiti in 2008 with scholarships needed.

Wesley Foundation at FSU

The pastor of the Wesley Foundation at FSU is the Rev. Vance Rains, a member of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. The Wesley Foundation has a staff of seven interns and 70 leaders of small groups.

St. Paul's supports the Wesley Foundation by preparing and serving a Wednesday night meal for students each semester. St. Paul's helps to raise money for mission trip scholarships for FSU students. Three mission trips are planned in 2008 to Guatemala.
